Christchurch earthquake claims

Updated: Tuesday 22 February 2011

Our priority is you and your family’s health and safety.

Please take care around any areas of damage particularly chimneys, brick walls and glass that may be unstable. Follow the advice of emergency services and stay out of damaged buildings.

We may not be able to get your life back to normal just yet but we can keep you informed. So if your home, business, property, farm or car was damaged by the earthquake, here are some important things you should know.

First of all, we’d like to reassure our customers that FinTel House and Contents policies provide cover above the limits provided by the earthquake commission.

If you’re insured with FinTel and your home has severe structural damage or is uninhabitable please call us as soon as possible on 0800 847 015 and we will talk you through what to do.

For less severe damage we recommend you lodge your claim on line at www.eqc.govt.nz

3 important things to do

1. Be safe
Always follow the advice of Emergency Services and if a building is damaged, please stay out. Also, be alert to dangers around you, like unstable chimneys, brick walls and glass.

2. Secure your property
Take whatever action you can to prevent any further loss or damage, without putting yourself at risk. And if you can no longer stay in your home…Your policy may cover you for the costs of alternative accommodation. To find out, talk to FinTel on 0800 801 801.

3. Prepare for your claim
Take photos of any damage and keep receipts for any urgent repairs. You have 90 days to make a claim, so take your time and be thorough.

FinTel Customers

As a FinTel customer our priority is to help you and your loved ones through this disaster. We have prepared this information to help guide you through the claims process with the EQC and our organisation. But firstly, please take care around areas of damage, keep yourself and your family safe and follow the advice of emergency services.

If your home has severe structural damage or is uninhabitable and you have not already contacted FinTel, please call us as soon as possible on 0800 847 015 and we can talk you through what to do. Our policies may provide for costs like temporary accommodation which you may be requiring.

Customers with house and/ or contents insurance are automatically covered by the EQC (Earthquake Commission) for earthquake damage. This amounts to $100,000 plus GST on your dwelling and $20,000 plus GST for contents. You can make a claim with the EQC online at www.eqc.govt.nz or you can contact them on 0800 326 243. You have 90 days within which to lodge your claim so take your time and be thorough. You must lodge your full claim within the 90 day period after the earthquake.

In most cases FinTel House and Contents policies provide cover above the limits provided by the Earthquake Commission and may also provide cover for some paths, some driveways, residential fences and pools which are not covered by EQC. We will work with you and the EQC where the damage is over the EQC limits and covered under your policy.

If your car, commercial property or your farm has been damaged, please call FinTel direct on 0800 847 015 to lodge your claim. Damage to these types of assets are not covered by the EQC so come to us directly for this.

FinTel has established an emergency response team to handle increased claims calls and our TOWER branch at 107 Gloucester Street, Christchurch is open to assist you.

To help us with your claim please take photos of any perishables that you need to throw away, keep any damaged items for later inspections as well as keeping all invoices and receipts. Please take whatever action you can to prevent any further loss or damage, without putting yourself at risk.

Please stay safe and if there is anything you are unsure about please don’t hesitate to give us a call on 0800 847 015.
